Biodiversity directly relates to cultural diversity. Therefore, issues of biodiversity threaten cultural diversity. Cultural diversity relies on biodiversity because it shapes our lifestyles. If we are destroying the biodiversity of our land, cultural diversity is affected due to the changes in lifestyle. This is often overlooked as a whole because of a frequent disconnect of ideas and a failure to see the relation between the two.
The link between biodiversity and cultural diversity is not always seen at first. When it becomes apparent, it is hard to see past. For example, many people find a food source from something that is found in their natural surroundings. If those natural surroundings are destroyed due to issues of biodiversity like poor fire management, pollution, or degradation, there will likely be a loss of that food source. Those people will then have to change their lifestyle to make up for the nutritional benefits that food source provided. This leads to other issues that can eventually, if great enough, threaten that cultural due to the change that has taken place.
One may argue that simply making a lifestyle change will not affect the culture as a whole. This can be true for small-scale instances, but definitely affects the culture on large-scale scenarios. For example, if Americans experiences an extinction of cattle, we would lose a staple of American culture. Hamburgers and beef are a large part of “classic” American food. This would redefine our culture since we no longer have that staple in existence. This is why government involvement is so important. The implementation of environmental protection groups and organizations has been vital in conserving our land and culture.
